Black Muddy River
People talk more about other later songs of Jerry's, but my favorite is Black Muddy River...something about it just moves me everytime I hear it. This one is not the best, but I still love it...

This show is getting hotter
The sound on this copy is above average for sure. It sounds just like being there. 5 stars to me.
At this time in my touring days this show is prime time. Having now been on tour for 3 full years every show in between this and Ventura 1982.
At this point I knew almost everyone on tour in one way or another. When you put that together along with the Kaiser's being our home base it made this show threw the roof with tour heads energy.

The next to the worst...
With all due respect y'all don't know what your talking about this is definitely one the of the worst New Year's show ever! Perhaps the only one worse than this is that one where they did "Not Fade Away" twice, (which might be the next year I can't remember, these where all so bad)? (Well I partially take this back since some of the tunes are pretty well performed like "When Push Comes to Shove", "Desolation Row" and a few others like "Gimme Some Lovin'" "Midnight Hour" but I still maintain this ain't nothing compared to years before as stated below)!
How do I know? Well, I went to nearly every New Year's show after the closing of Winterland, I think I only missed two or three of them, which went that good either but maybe even better than this! If you want to hear a good one I kindly but strongly urge you to check out 81'-82' which in my humble opinion was the best ever, even better than the closing of Winterland, although I know I'll get some argument about that or some of the earlier shows! Why, besides them playing Dark Star which yes they also did at the the closing of Winterland but a lot of other great stuff which gusto and for 4 hours and 10 minutes not including the breaks (plural)!
In general, they are either roughly about as good as the previous one, from the last few Winterland ones on through the first few at Oakland Aud, (later known as Kaiser) to gradually getting better up to my favorite and then gradually getting worse from then on with a few minor exceptions!

Sad Ending to Show
The Brokedown Palace that ends the show was done for a roadie's wife who had recently died. There were 2 huge black funeral wreaths on either side of the stage in her memory. To me, it was a hauntingly beautiful tribute.

Happy New Year- "Give Me five I am still alive."
The tune selection is varied and not at all predictable. Jack Straw>Sugaree and how about the U.S. Blues in the first set. That had to blow some folks minds.
Touch is great for New Years! There is a good to be alive feel to this show. How can you go wrong with Let it Grow in the second set which is followed by a kind of stiff Black Muddy River, still getting this one worked out.(some nice harmonies toward the end of the tune)Samson- One of my favorite dance tunes!!!!!Great intro, Brent working around the edges.A lovely Terrapin...

21 years after my first show, (Dillon Stadium '74) I finally made it to N.Y.E. with the Dead. It was a cool, rainy night in Oakland, but the music and the vibe were warm. Jerry was having fun and although his voice had lost its warmth and subtlety by the 80's he played with an intensity I hadn't seen for a few years. Bob even remebered all the words to Desolation Row and Jerry slipped in the melody from Auld Lang Syne at the end of one of his solo's. This was the last N.Y.E. show at Kaiser and even though it was kind of a dump, it was small enough to remind of the old theater shows. A good time was had by all.

again I usually differ on NYE shows. I like this one for many reasons. I like it better than 87.Most people will disagree. First set is short but well played. Second set Let it grow is nice. New tunes are coming on and the 3rd set is fun.
